The Christmas Decorations Encroach!

10/14/2019

This story started as a prequel for The Tendire Gate. I’m serious, that’s what I was trying to write. But that story, a worthy one that needs to get written at some point, went through three or four versions before I finally had to set it aside, and start writing something else. It was November, and I was stressed and frustrated with the world, and yeah, part of that frustration was holiday candy. I ended up taking a bit of that frustration and bits and pieces of several people I know, and the heart of a building I know very well, and building this story instead, about a custodian over the holidays.

It’s a Christmas Story

Even if it doesn't seem like it at first, the story is a Christmas story. It just didn’t work to start it at Christmas, for a bunch of reasons, not the least of which is that our protagonist, Carl Gibson, hates Christmas!
Carl Gibson hates Christmas. But when he saves Halloween for a little boy, he finds himself smitten by the boy's father. Fledgling feelings grow too strong to ignore, but the spectre of Christmas looms large. Can Carl move past a history of loss and see the vision of Christmas within such easy reach - if he'll only grab hold...
Why does he hate Christmas so much? Well, that’s his story to tell. It still makes me cry, and that’s a good thing. It should! This is a tear-jerking story that still manages to be a feel good story, and honestly? I’m rather proud of it, because that’s not an easy mix to manage.

The story starts just before Halloween, with Carl raving about how the stores have already swapped out the Halloween candy for Christmas candy. I think a lot of us who love Halloween can relate to that. Why Halloween is so special to Carl is something we only hint at in the story. But what we do see is a crucial connection, one that’s simmered for a long time that finally gets made. I love this because I think it’s something we all see in our lives, but not so much in romance where so very often it’s the tall, dark, and handsome stranger.

What we’re left with in the end is a sweet and heartbreaking story. A holiday story. A romantic story. One I hope will resonate.

A Christmas Vision | COMING SOON

Cover: A Christmas Vision by Ashavan Doyon. A shirtless, muscled man wearing a Santa robe slung off his arms like a shawl and a Santa hat, amid swirling snow.
by Ashavan Doyon—THERE’S NO GLORY in custodial work. That never bothered campus janitor Carl Gibson any. He worked hard—had to. His love life was a tragedy best not reopened and his only hope for the happiness he broadcast to the world was in two things: Halloween and the shrill, ever-demanding bark of his darling Lilah. But Halloween decorations were being displaced by Christmas already, and his precious pug? He could only hope she’d hold on a bit longer.

Austin Edwards had failed his little boy. The most junior dining manager at the college, when everyone called out on Halloween, he got called in. The house lights were all dark. except one. A sparkling hope of legend at the college. For his boy’s sake, he hoped Carl was as crazy about Halloween as the stories said. When Carl filled his son’s empty bag with candy, Austin couldn’t help but wonder why such a wonderful man was so alone. He had to find out.

With Christmas fast approaching, Carl and Austin tip-toe into dating. But they both have ghosts and memories to contend with. Can Austin be Carl’s Christmas vision? Or will Carl retreat, as he always has?

Holiday Blues

It's the holiday season and I'm having some post holiday blues. Maybe it's just the excitement of the holiday, or maybe it's that some of my goals simply haven't come to fruition.

We were going to have a holiday story this year. The story stared two unlikely characters, a dining services manager and a custodian, and a happy ending found over the Christmas holiday. It was, like most of Ashavan's stories, intensely emotional—and happy too. But as wonderful as it is, there wasn't time to put it through editing and formatting and offer it up to you.

The positive thing is that the story isn't something that will become immediately dated or irrelevant. That means next year we can offer it properly. It even turned out long enough that a paperback edition isn't out of the question.
Banner ad for Andrew's Prayer. 66% off. Sale ends Dec 31. Selling his body was easy. This love thing? That's hard: College Rose Romances book 3 - Andrew's Prayer only $2

The holidays should be special and uplifting, and even our faith-poor doubter Andrew was able to see that. Perhaps it's appropriate that we celebrate this holiday with Andrew. I'm sure he has something planned for the holiday, in fact I know he does.

Find out what at a special price. Andrew's Prayer is on sale through December 31, 2018 at the super low price of $2—that's 66% off!

What does he have planned? Is he celebrating quietly with his mom? Has he surrendered to the cacophony of celebration with Grant? Or is he watching Christmas movies with Mrs. D?

Feeling some Pride

6/28/2018

PRIDE month always feels a bit off for me. Growing up in a college community, we had PRIDE early in May every year—a concession to the desire to include the large local student population in the annual parade. So for me June always feels a little late.

This PRIDE we're celebrating the release of Love Aggression, by Cindy Sutherland. Despite some delays and pitfalls along the way, I felt an amazing bit of personal pride when I held the proof in my hand. I know Cindy will too in a few weeks when her author copies get to her.

As part of PRIDE, we've put all novels (that's everything that's not already 99 cents) on sale for $3.99. I hope that some of you will take a chance on our stories. On the College Rose Romances. On Love Aggression. Even on our 99 cent bargains. Remember: Celebrate love. Celebrate PRIDE. Happy reading.

The many flavors of Cindy Sutherland

Obviously handsome alpha shifters get the first place spot here. One of Cindy's many flavors is her passion for Ty—her alpha werewolf hero in Love Aggression. Forceful, dominant and protective, there's a lot of Ty to love, but the biggest part for me will always be Jesse, the non-negotiable six-year-old part of the bargain.

Buy Cindy's new release Love Aggression at Purple Horn Press, or find it at Amazon, B&N, or other fine retailers.

But there's so much more...

Cindy wrote a number of novellas and a full length novel, all published by Dreamspinner Press. While we celebrate Cindy's success with Love Aggression, I think it's important to revisit those other books too. As luck would have it, today is the final day of Dreamspinner's Celebrate Community sale, so you can pick any of these up from Dreamspinner for 30% off if you buy them today (after you've picked up Love Aggression, of course). All are romances of various flavors.

Wrapped Up in Chains (BDSM)
Cindy's full length novel is an easy entry for readers interested in BDSM. Centering on dom Devon West, the story covers his efforts to bring Chase into the community of safety and consent that the young sub has never known. Terrifying and poignant, I found myself rooting for Chase all the way through.

Hunt and Pray (Suspense/Thriller)
I love this one for the cover, which isn't typical of the genre. But the story hooks you and keeps you terrified, wondering all the while if Drew can escape his predicament, at the mercy of a madman and the son Chance that is his only hope to survive on the run.

Luck of the Irish (Sweet and Sexy)
Cian owns me in this one. I confess, I got to read it as Cindy was writing it, and I will say she stopped in some places that made me just want to scream. But I loved these two men together. I wanted to borrow them, either one—both! Setting and character made this one a win for me.

Other Stories
Cindy also dipped her hand in cowboy stories with Cowboy Way and has a strong contemporary (translated into four languages) with All the Things I Didn't See. Find all her Dreamspinner Press releases at their store.

Release Day! Love Aggression

Ty has lived without love. Now he’s ready to protect the purest love of all—his son.
Picture
I'm so happy to be here to talk to you about Love Aggression today, on release day!

Cindy Sutherland has given us a wonderful story, full of suspense and wonder and romance. It's a shifter story, a werewolf story, a story about family and the struggle to find romance when you're afraid and on the run. Ty's little son, Jesse, will steal your heart and run with it at times and you'll wonder if you're supposed to be paying more attention to him or to the romance. But that's part of what makes it great, because Ty can't have a romance without acknowledging Jesse, and the central truth that keeping Jesse safe is the most important thing to him right now—even over his own heart.

There's a lot that's gone into this story. It's hard for me, sometimes, as an editor, because I read the early drafts and I remember things that aren't part of the story for the reader anymore. But I've also read the final cover-to-cover three times since the final edit. As an editor, I'm terrified because you always miss things, and I know they're in there, waiting for me to find and chastise myself over.

But for me, getting the input from proofs, hearing about what readers wanted more of, hearing that they liked it, just affirmed for me that I'd made the right choice. I've been told in no uncertain terms that we need a sequel for Woof, and I have to tell you, I hope Cindy is up for that, because I'd love to see it.

Enjoy the story.

Don't forget to pick up your copy of Love Aggression at the Purple Horn Press store.

The Purple Horn Press store copy is a zip file with the pdf, epub and mobi files, but as long as you're buying the book from an authorized retailer, you should buy from where works best for you as a reader. Love Aggression is also available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and other fine ebook retailers.

The Tendire Gate is OPEN

Obviously we're excited to announce the release of our second promotional short, The Tendire Gate by Ashavan Doyon. Like the first, this one will remain at the low price of 99 cents to give new readers to the press a chance to try out our books.
Picture
There's a lot of exciting things happening with this story. It's our first story that didn't fit neatly into the contemporary mold. Offering something sci-fi that fit the apocalyptic mold of so much current young adult fiction was something that appealed me, in part because I'm a fan of those books, but I do not see myself reflected in them. That was a lot of my drive to write gay romances—the dearth of stories that I could see a reflection in.

The Tendire Gate is a story of a young man caught between duty and love... and while the setting definitely plays into that conflict, it's still one that fuels all sorts of romances. I'm a fan of love stories that go beyond finding love to keeping it in your life when circumstances make that hard. For Elijah, the duty is grim, and has kept him very lonely.

Read it and don't forget to let us know what you think! You can always find Ashavan at his website ashavandoyon.com or just drop us a line here at Purple Horn Press. Sequels or Prequels aren't out of the question if the story is popular!

I can't find The Tendire Gate at Amazon!

I know. It's awful. The Tendire Gate, while quite romantic, doesn't have a whole lot of sexy times, so we're not quite sure what's going on, but the symptoms are consistent with what readers and authors refer to as the "adult dungeon." We're looking into it.

In the meantime, The Tendire Gate is available at the Purple Horn Press store.

And if you're really determined and in the US, you can buy it at this direct Amazon link.

We'll get it broken out of the dungeon soon... don't worry!

Celebrating Andrew's Prayer

Blog banner for Andrew's Prayer. A dark tunnel. At the left the words Ashavan Doyon - Andrew's Prayer - College Rose Romances Book 3. At the right, where the tunnel opens to the light, the face of a young man in thought, lit up almost at though the tunnel entrance was a halo.

Andrew's Prayer
College Rose Romances Book 3

Before Aidan found his love, in that nebulous period before the College Rose Romances start, Aidan had a broken heart. Broken by Michael. His response was to search out meaningless encounters—pleasure. He used two boys from his lit classes for that purpose. Both closeted. I assumed, initially, that the two characters were a lot alike.

Oh, how wrong I was!

I couldn't write Andrew at first. Lawrence (Rory) insisted on pushing his way in. Then, when I was deeply stuck in writing Becoming Rory, Andrew's Prayer came, all in a rush. Drew is the sort of character I really like. We see a bit of him in the first two books, enough to get a picture of who he is and what he is. And I love showing everything that's underneath those impressions.

Because readers of the first two stories probably don't like Drew very much. Unlike Lawrence, who was very much in the background, Drew is up front. He's taking money to talk to reporters and give up the goods on Aidan. He's pushing Steven to join him in the tunnels and drown his sorrows in Drew's body in just the way that Aidan had. He's not a character that you wanted to like.

Yet, inexplicably, you find out very fast that there is a whole lot of unexpected in Andrew Tuttleman. And, of all my characters, a whole lot of distance to travel. Because Drew doesn't even believe love exists. Not romantic love. Not what Aidan and Steven were desperately searching for.

Finding that place where he could believe in love wasn't easy for Drew. And indeed, that's the joy of Andrew's Prayer, discovering that capacity and desire for love that he didn't even realize he had. To give you some hope for Drew, I'd like to share a little extra I wrote for the story, that pairs up Drew with one of my favorite side characters, the ever delightful Melinda Marie.

Author Extra - Andrew's Prayer

“Don’t run!”

The young girl in her bright yellow sundress skidded to a stop. “Why not, Mr. Tutty?”

Drew smiled at her, running to catch up and hold her hand. His other hand held the sunflower he’d given her earlier. He’d promptly taken it back, proclaiming that the park was not a safe place for the flower. At least not in the tender young hands of Melinda Marie.

Melinda, for her part, adjusted the wide, wavy brim of her equally yellow hat. “Last time we sat over there.”

Nodding, Drew bit his lip, his eyes on the tree line. “Remember the scary man, Melinda?”

She turned on a full-fledged pouty face.

“Yeah, me too.” He pointed over to a shaded spot in the central green. “How about over there. There’s shade, and we could see the ducks.”

“I want to feed the ducks, Mr. Tutty.” Melinda stressed the word feed like it was far more important.

A chuckle was Drew’s only response.

“Daddy would take me!”

“Shh, Mel. Your dad will let you feed the ducks once he gets here.”

She stomped once, but followed where he led, gripping his hand tight. When they got to the tree, Drew sent a quick text to let her dad know where they’d be.

“When is Gram Tutty gonna be well enough to read me a story?”

Heart frozen, Drew knelt down beside the little girl. “Soon, I hope. What does your daddy tell you to do when you want someone to get better?”

“Think good things about them and pray. But you don’t believe that.”

He let out a long sigh and brushed his fingers against the girl’s cheek. “Sometimes it’s so important that you have to do it and just hope you believe enough.”

Melinda Marie leaned against the tree. “I like Gram Tutty. She tells funny stories. She’s going to get better, isn’t she?”

A rich voice answered. “We can hope. We can pray. And we can be there for her whether she gets better or not.”

“Daddy!” Melinda grabbed a jean-clad leg and hugged tight.

Grant was handsome. Blond hair brushed and golden, cheeks warmly red. He was fit and gorgeous and looked just a tad out of place in the brilliant white of his dress shirt. His tie was abstract, silver and a blue-green that made his eyes sparkle. The red in his cheeks spread as Grant leaned forward and touched his lips to Drew’s. It was chaste and sweet and it still sent a tingle all the way to Drew’s toes.

Loving Aidan
College Rose Romances Book 1

When Loving Aidan was first released, one of the pieces that didn't fit into the story was the actual scene where Aidan met Sammy. The scene is referenced in the story. As readers we know what happened—that when Aidan moves in Sammy protects him somehow. But as readers we never experience it.

I wrote the scene where they meet as an author extra to share with readers, and while the blog where it was originally shared is, I believe, long since gone, I am happy to share it here again.

Author Extra - Loving Aidan

Aidan turned onto the narrow service road that led to the dorm. He pulled up near the building and onto the grass. This early there weren’t many students about yet. Aidan stepped out of the car, wincing a little at the sudden heat. He was dressed as he always did in a long sleeve shirt and a buttoned waistcoat. He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and lightly dabbed at the sweat that had immediately broken out on his forehead.

“Oooh. Hey, guys, here he is. Our resident piss-ant fag.

Aidan turned and gave the line of lounging young men a glance. He conceded only a single raised eyebrow as he passed them by, ignoring the ongoing catcalls. He should report them. But nothing was ever done about it. Instead, he entered the small residential office at the side of the building. A student asked his room number, and more numbly than really warranted at this early hour offered him his key. He took it and looked at the label. Samuel Riley.

“This isn’t mine,” he said to one of the students handing out keys.

The perky young woman glanced at it quickly. “Oh, sorry. That’s your roommate’s key.” She ruffled through the box. “Ah, here it is. Sorry about that,” she said, taking the key back from him and handing him another.

“Thanks,” he muttered, and turned to leave, barreling into a very tall young man. He looked up and all he could think of was dark. The man’s skin was charcoal black, and slick from the heat. Aidan stammered a quick apology automatically.

“Ain’t no skin off my teeth,” said the man with a smile, his cheeks showing deep dimples.

Aidan was sure his heart was going to stop, and he quickly looked at the ground to hide the red in his cheeks even as he hastened his way to the door. He was hit immediately with another catcall. The row of young men stood idly by cars still stuffed with boxes. The staff would help people later on as more keys were picked up, and they were waiting, as they always did. Most of them wouldn’t carry a single box of their own.

Aidan did not glare, though he wanted to. Instead he went to his car and pulled out the first box.

“Showing off that ass? You maybe want som—” the young man yelped suddenly.

Aidan turned to see the man he’d run into in the office staring down the row of young men.

“Have a problem with him?” asked the man.

“Come on, Sammy, kid’s a fag. Look at him!”

And Sammy looked. Aidan was being given a thorough once over. Sammy chuckled, showing his dimples again and slapped the other man on the shoulder. “Don’t know what you’re worried about. His eyes are on me.” Sammy stripped off his shirt, stuffing it into a back pocket where it hung loosely against his leg. “See?”

“Sammy, he’s looking at you!”

And Aidan was. His eyes were locked on Sammy, on perfectly chiseled abs, gazing across the broad, smooth chest.

“Has taste,” said Sammy with a grin, showing dimples again. “Clearly you lot of cowards got nothin’ to worry about.”

Sammy walked away from the row of young men and stepped up to Aidan. “Need some help?” he asked.

Numbly, Aidan nodded.

Sammy smiled, clapped him on the shoulder, and took the box from his hands. “Let’s get these boxes upstairs.”

Aidan gulped and softly murmured a thank you.

“Ain’t no problem, roommie.”

Aidan’s eyes widened. Sammy. Samuel Riley. Dear God, this was his roommate.
